Solution

The solution is non-obvious to say the least. There is an AppAssure KB on this topic, but it’s not sufficient. Really, you need to do this:

  1. Unprotect the volumes on the protected server via the AppAssure Console.
  2. Set Windows Explorer so you can see Operating System files.
  3. Stop the Replay service on the protected machine and set to Disabled.
  4. Stop the Volume Shadow Copy service on the protected machine and set to Disabled.
  5. For each drive you are trying to protect:
    1. Set the permissions on “System Volume Information” to MACHINEAdministrator:F, SYSTEM:F, CREATOR OWNER.
    2. Go to System Volume Information and delete all of the contents.
  6. Wait for a minute.
  7. Set the Volume Shadow Copy service to Manual. There is no need to Start the service.
  8. Set the Replay service to Automatic and then Start the service.
  9. Wait a minute.
  10. Re-protect the volumes on the protected server via the AppAssure Console.
  11. Wait a minute.
  12. Kick off a snapshot.

If it fails give it a few minutes and try again. It should work at this point.
