Booting Windows 8 64-bit with VMware vSphere

You are having issues with Windows 8 bombing out during an install under VMware, perform these steps.

Solution

  1. When you try to do the install at first, you’ll get a warning “msg.cpuid.noLongmodeQuesitonFmt: this Virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems: However, 64-bit operation is not possible”.
    vm-error
  2. This means that VT support is disabled in your BIOS. For some reasons, some systems are shipped with this disabled. You need to enable it. Boot into the VMware vSphere underlying hardware server’s BIOS and enable VT.
    dell-cpu-vt-enabled
  3. Verify that “Execute Disable” bit is ENABLED.

If both of these settings are enabled, you should be able to boot and install Windows 8 64-bit on VMWare.
