Connect to a Cisco VPN

You need to connect to your work LAN or remote site using Cisco VPN.

Cisco VPN

You need to install the VPN client, import the PCF file, and then connect to the VPN.

Install the Client

You’ll need to ensure you have the Cisco VPN client installed. There is a 32-bit version and 64-bit version. Download the file and then run and install the Cisco VPN client on your computer.

NOTE: If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, whether 32-bit or 64-bit, ensure you have the latest client installed. Otherwise things may work sometimes and not at other times.

Import the PCF

Second, import the PCF that was given to you. The PCF is just a simple text file that can be imported into the Cisco VPN client that defines how to connect to the target VPN network. Each PCF is specific to a particular VPN connection, i.e., every company will have a different PCF to use. Following are the steps to import the PCF.

  1. Click Start->All Programs->Cisco Systems VPN Client
  2. Click Import on the menu bar of the Cisco VPN client
  3. Browse to the PCF file and select it
  4. Click Open

Connect to the VPN

Once imported, the PCF will create a new VPN connection. To connect, do this:
  1. Click on the VPN entry
  2. Enter the VPN username/password you were given if it’s not included already in the entry
Some VPN connections will disable your normal Internet access. This is defined by the business deploying the VPN solution. When in doubt, ask.
