Connect Using the Windows VPN Client

You are using Windows 7+ and need to connect to your office VPN using the Windows VPN client.

Solution

Follow these steps:

  1. Client the Network Connection icon in your System Tray (near your Windows clock).
  2. Click on your VPN connection, which should already exist.
  3. Click Connect.
  4. Enter your VPN username and password. This is often your Active Directory username and password.
  5. Click Connect.
  6. Wait for 5-10 seconds. If there is an error, you will get an error message. Otherwise, you should be connected.

You can tell if you are connected by going back to the Network Connection and noting that the connection now shows as Connected.

To connect to a computer, you will often need to use the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN), so instead of a server being mail it would be mail.example.local.
