Determine Why a GPO is Failing to be Applied

You have created a GPO but it’s not being applied. You look in the Windows Application Event Log and see entries such as:

The user ‘EULA’ preference item in the ‘Software – Adobe Reader 10 {D7ECF9A8-2E3D-4CC4-AC5D-29089E76913C}’ Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code ‘0x800700a1 The specified path is invalid.’ This error was suppressed.

The best way to figure this out is to create a HTML file using gpresult to show you the issue.

  1. Log into the target machine.
  2. Run the following command:
    C:> gpresult -h C:GP_result.html

In XP, you may need to use:
    C:> gpresult > GP_result.txt

  3. After a minute or two, you’ll find a new file C:GP_result.html. Double-click on the HTML file to open it in your web browser.
  4. As we can see, there are a variety of errors on various GPO’s. And, in fact, some GPO’s are listed by their alphanumeric ID, meaning they are invalid at this point.

Getting the report is only half the battle of course. You need to review and debug each of the reasons the GPO application was denied.

To begin, read the Microsoft article on the issue of GPO’s being denied.
