Fix Microsoft Access Single User limitation: “The database has been placed in a state by user”

You have a Microsoft Access database or Microsoft Access front-end to an Microsoft SQL database. One user is able to open the Access database, but after that other users get the error “The database has been placed in a state by user ‘<username>’ on machine ‘<machinename>’  that prevents it from being opened or locked.”

Solution

Although you’d never know it, this is a very specific error that has a very specific solution: You need to set the network path where the database is located as a Trusted Location.

  1. Open Microsoft Access.
  2. See our blog article Adding a Network Share to Microsoft Access Trusted Location for the solution.
  3. Restart Microsoft Access.
