Office 365 Directory Sync – Limit Directory Sync to Specific OUs

You have enabled Office 365 Directory Sync, but you would like to limit the synchronization to a specific set of OUs

Solution

We will use the MIISCLIENT utility that was installed with the Directory Sync program. The MIISCLIENT is in this location on the Sync Server

  • C:Program FilesWindows Azure Active Directory SyncSYNCBUSSynchronization ServiceUIShellmiisclient.exe

You may want to place a shortcut on your desktop, as this utility can be used to monitor Directory Sync progress

  1. If you haven’t done so already, consolidate your desired AD objects to a set of OUs to sync with Office 365
  2. Launch the MIISCLIENT
  3. Go to the Management Agents tab, Right-Click the Active Directory Connector and click Properies
  4. Select Configure Directory Partitions and click the Containers button
  5. Enter your administrative credentials in the User name and Password fields, then click OK
  6. Remove the check boxes from all OUs and Containers you do not want to have synced with O365 and click OK
  7. Click OK on the Properties page
  8. Right-Click the Active Directory Connector and select
  9. After running the Delta Sync, go to the Operations tab. Select the latest job. You will see in the bottom left corner that there are disconnectors, those items will be removed from O365.
