Using Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome as an FTP Client

You want to use Internet Explorer (IE) as an FTP client.

This is easily done.

  1. Start your web browser.
  2. Enter the FTP address in the form of ftp://ftp.example.com. Note, IE sometimes doesn’t that URL when working with some FTP websites, so use the cheatsheet below:
    Internet Explorer: Use “ftp://login@ftp.example.com”
    Chrome: Use “ftp://ftp.example.com”
    Firefox: Use “ftp://ftp.example.com”
  3. You will be prompted your FTP username and password. For some FTP services, the username is of the form “username”, while for others it is “username@example.com”.
Remember, if IE or Windows Explorer reports an error trying your website, you may need to use the format “ftp://login@ftp.example.com” when entering the address.
