Using WinSCP to SCP or SFTP to an SSH Server

You are Windows desktop user and need to routinely copy files back and forth to a server using SSH SCP or SSH SFTP.

Solution

Use WinSCP! It’s very easy to use and has a familiar interface.

  1. First, download and install WinSCP.
  2. Next, start WinSCP via Start->All Programs->WinSCP->WinSCP.
  3. WinSCP will start.
  4. Click New.
  5. Enter your login information–similar to configuration an FTP client.
  6. Click Save.
  7. The default Save name is usually fine. Click Ok.
  8. Click your new login configuration and click Login.
  9. A Norton Commander style interface will appear, with the local PC on the left and the remote SSH server on the right.
  10. Drag and drop files to transfer them.
