Windows 7 Offline Files Does Not Work – Offline Files Service (CscService) Dies

You are running Windows 7 and you can’t see any Offline Files options in Explorer when you right-click a file or folder. Further, if you look at the CscService Service, it’s dead and you can’t start it. When trying to start it, you get the error:

The Offline Files service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the path specified.

Solution

Your Offline Files cache is corrupted. You need to re-initialize the cache per Microsoft.

Per Microsoft, you can force Windows to clear the cache via a Registry setting.

  1. Open Regedit
  2. Create an entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionNetCache:
    Key Name: FormatDatabase
    Key Type: DWORD
    Key Value: 1
  3. Reboot the PC
Instead of using Regedit, you can optionally run this command:
C:> REG ADD “HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServicesCSCParameters” /v FormatDatabase /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
After running this, reboot the PC.
